How to Really Lose Weight
Everybody is concerned about weight loss, and emerging from amidst the popular garbage, is a guide that will really tell you how.
Losing weight is not easy. But putting it on can be (apart from those of us with mega metabolisms). There are many factors that contribute to the gaining of weight. Two are beyond our control; our genetic predisposition to retaining or burning fat; and our age – as we grow older our metabolism slows, particularly past 30. However, the rest are well within our ability to manage; and if theyre managed well, their effect will outweigh that of the previous two factors.
The majority of the other factors can be summarized and examined in two broad names. These are the amount of calories we burn, and the amount of calories we consume. If the amount of calories we burn is higher than the amount of calories we consume, then we will lose weight. It really is as simple as that.
We burn calories by expending energy – even typing on the computer burns calories. We consume calories by drinking and eating. It would make sense then to assume that we should exercise more and eat less. Almost, but not quite.
We do indeed have to exercise more, and in fact it is almost impossible to lose any serious amounts of weight safely, without exercising considerably. But I will return to exercise in more detail later. The other part of our assumption is not so accurate. We dont necessarily have to eat less food; we have to consume fewer calories.
This means that instead of starving ourselves, which will only deprive us of the nutrition needed to operate in our daily lives. We should eat full meals comprised of healthy, low-fat foods.
We should avoid trans and saturated fats; i.e. Chips, some oils, sweets, crisps etc. And focus on getting all our fat from monounsaturated and polysaturated fats; i.e. Olive oil, nuts, avocado, fish etc. Some saturated fats however can still be consumed in moderation; i.e. dairy and meat. But someone serious about losing weight should consider avoiding these altogether.
