A Review of the Medifast Diet Plan
Is the Medifast diet plan as healthy as it is claimed to be? Learn about the advantages and disadvantages of taking this diet program.
The Medifast diet is a widely accepted program existing for more than two decades now. It is endorsed by health professionals, and Medifast diet reviews abound in the internet. However, many of these reviews are found in sites advertising and selling the product. A more object review of the program, rather than the product is the goal of this review.
Special meal substitutes are available for people with special needs, such as those suffering from gout, seniors, teenagers, new moms, vegetarians and those who have undergone weight loss surgery.
In the Medifast diet one is expected to lose around 2-5 pounds per weeks while preserving a lean body mass. This is achieved by controlling the portions of the meal replacements to attain a calorie consumption between 800-1000/day. Protein content of the products is based on soy and whey. Choices vary from puddings, soups, oatmeal, eggs, shakes, energy bars, chili, vegetables, and more. For the extra home-made meal, one is allowed to have fish or lean meat plus vegetables. However, some vegetables and fruits with high carbohydrate content are excluded. Carbohydrates are limited to 80-85 grams/day, and fats may be increased if leaner options are taken.
This low calorie diet is later shifted to a maintenance phase after the desired weight loss is achieved. In this phase, more calories and carbohydrates are gradually added to the diet while controlling portions and making healthy food choices.
Mild to moderate exercise, which is not beyond one’s normal limit, is recommended for the first three weeks of the program. After this period, activities may be increased, until one can tolerate doing exercises 5 days a week during the maintenance phase.
Medifast diet reviews agree that the product is very helpful in achieving weight loss. The reasons why this program has been widely recommended and used through almost three decades are:

I used the Medifast plan and I lost 35 lbs. It worked, but then I watched the latest documentary Hungry for Change and I have decided not to return to Medifast. The main reason is because I don’t need their foods anymore nor do I want to digest them. It’s dead food and I want to rid myself of toxins. In my last Medifast visit I mentioned to the counselor that I was not going to use their food to maintain my lifestyle. Right away, I could see the counselor was controlling her emotions to not get upset. I told her that I can maintain my lifestyle by juicing and detox and choosing better foods and staying away form toxic foods. This didn’t go over well and she said she would speak to her manager! What, you can speak to anyone you wish, your food product is toxic! In the end, it’s all about Medifast pushing a consumable food product masked by their one on one consultations. Nice people, but I was saved by the Hungry for Change documentary!
