Ryan Hall, Road Miler
Ryan Hall Will Do USA 1 Mile Road Championships in Minnesota
Its quite a move down in distance for Hall, who ran 2:04:58, the fastest marathon ever by an American, at the Boston Marathon on April 18. Hall, though, was an NCAA 5000-meter champion at Stanford. On Thursday, hell be in the Medtronic TC 1 Mile in Minneapolis, which is hosting the USA 1 Mile Road Championships. Hell take on two-time defending champ David Torrence. Hall decided to run after speaking with Rod Dixon, the 1972 Olympic 1500-meter bronze medalist and 1983 New York City Marathon winner. He advised me to break four minutes for the mile as soon as possible, explains Hall. While I realize it may take a number of tries to go sub-four, it is a lifelong goal of mine and I believe that if I achieve it, it will certainly help my marathon. This will be Halls first mile race since 2006. His wife Sara will compete in the womens mile in Minneapolis; she was the runnerup in 2009. (photo of Ryan Hall by Victah Sailer) More
After a Brilliant 13.1-Mile Debut, Whats Next for Galen Rupp?
Rupp, a 2008 U.S. 10,000-meter Olympian while still an Oregon undergraduate, was in contention until the very late stages of NYC Half-Marathon in March and took third place in 1:00:30. It went by a lot faster than I thought it would, Rupp recalls. I thought it would feel like it was taking forever, but actually it went by pretty quick, even though its such a long ways compared to what I was used to doing, and running on the roads and hills. Rupp could have a future on those roads, but he insists Im really focusing on the track right now. His training partner is Britains Mo Farahwho finished first in that NYC Half. To go through something with somebody like that and make it out, it gives you a lot of confidence, says Rupp. And hes a really good guy, too. Hes so laid back. Were real similar. More
Geoffrey Mutai Commits to a Boston 10K and Causes Confusion
Mutai and Caroline Kilel, the 2011 Boston Marathon champs, will be back in the city to compete in the inaugural B.A.A. 10K on June 26. Mutais 2:03:02 in Boston was the fastest 26.2-miler in history,
while Kilels 2:22:36 is the fourth-fastest womens time ever at the Patriots Day race. The B.A.A. 10K is on a course through Boston’s Back Bay, Kenmore Square, and Boston University neighborhoods. The fast, flat route begins and ends at Boston Common, with long stretches along picturesque Commonwealth Avenue. The winners will each earn $5,000.
Meanwhile, Mutai is at the center of a will he or wont he saga involving the marathon at this summers World Championships in Daegu, South Korea. Athletics Kenya released a team roster with Mutais name on it that was more of an ideal wish list than anything solid. The athletes hadnt made firm commitments, and Mutai made clear almost immediately that he would skip Daegu and do the Chicago or New York City Marathon this fall. Now, under pressure, hes wavering in his decision. I need to talk to them (Athletics Kenya) and my management before I say whether I will accept or refuse. Discussions are going on, Mutai comments. Allyson Felix and Walter Dix Triumph in Doha
Doha, Qatar on Friday was the first stop on the 2011 Diamond League circuit. Allyson Felix, overall Diamond League winner in the 200 and 400 in 2010, won the 400 in Doha in 50.33, the years best time in the world, as she fended off a challenge from Amantle Montsho of Botswana, who was clocked in 50.41. It is a decent time, nothing special, surmised Felix. It is a very long season so I just want to take things slowly. Walter Dixs 20.06 in the mens 200 in Doha is a 2011 world-leading time, too. A competitive mens 3000 went to Ethiopia’s Yenew Alamirew in 7:27.26, another 2011 world leader. More
Bolt vs. Gay Is the Jolt Track Needs
So says Joe Battaglia of Universal Sports, and just about anyone who covers or cares about track and field would agree. Earlier this year, wed been left believing there might not be any match-up between Jamaicas Usain Bolt and Americas Tyson Gay, historys two fastest men, prior to the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea later this summer. IAAF
President Lamine Diack is now suggesting therell possibly be one meet before Daegu featuring Bolt and Gay going head-to-head. More Meanwhile, Asafa Powell, arguably the number three guy in the sprints, declares we need to have our top stars racing each other to make the sport exciting, adding if we reserved the head-to-heads for only the major championships, nobody would care much about the rest of the meets. Well, thats all well and good, Mr. Powell, but some of us can remember beyond yesterday and recall a few years ago when you and Justin Gatlin were the worlds top two sprinters, and getting you to race other outside of a global championship was a virtual impossibilityeven when youd show up at the same meet, and run in separate races. In all fairness, well say that the fault clearly belonged to the agents and race directors, not to the runners. (photo of Tyson Gay and Usain Bolt by Victah Sailer) More
A Gold in London Wouldnt Mean the End for Paula Radcliffe
Right now, everything the world marathon record holder is doing athletically is a stepping stone to London 2012, everything is working back from that. Most observers think that Radcliffe, who has been winning world titles since her teens and is now 37, would be thrilled to cap a career with Olympic gold and then call it a day. She explains my career might come to an end one day but it wont be because Ive lost the competitive spirit. Itll be because my body wont withstand the training it needs to race as well as I want to race. Radcliffe affirms Im going to keep going as long as I can. Ive had a very long career and Im very grateful, but this is still what I most want to do. More

Anne Kesselring: Oregons 800-Meter Star From Germany
She has handled everything, University of Oregon Coach Vin Lananna says of the challenging workouts hes thrown at Kesselring. Shes a pretty remarkable kid. Shes a four-time German junior champion from Bavaria who elected to study and race in the United States, and it was she who contacted Oregon. Now, as a sophomore, she has the best womens 800-meter time of 2011 in the U.S. collegiate ranks. In Europe, Kesselring was used to a club system and admits I felt it was going to be really difficult to do running and do a good academic program because we dont have collegiate athletics. Well, her GPA is 4.16 (thanks to some A-pluses). And the runnings clearly working out okay. Im super excited about the rest of the season, says Kesselring. Everything has just gone great, and I dont think Ive peaked yet. More
Wholl Be the Contenders in the NCAA Womens 1500?
Well, one of them could be the abovementioned Kesselring, who despite her emphasis thus far on the 800 could move to the 1500. At More, Kevin Liao looks at some of the other logical contenders, who include Kesselrings Oregon teammate Jordan Hasay, Villanovas Sheila Reid, and Georgetowns Emily Infeld, plus the lesser-known Lea Wallace of Sacramento State.
