Paula Radcliffe Pushes Boundaries
Dont Be Afraid to Push the Boundaries, Suggests Paula Radcliffe
The marathon world record-holder—whose next 26.2-miler is in Berlin in September—has been world class since she won the World
Junior Cross Country Championships back in 1992. The Guardian gives her one of those quickie QA interviews covering myriad topics, including her desire to be remembered as someone who achieved all they were capable of career-wise and was the best mum and wife she could be and her regret that she has a tendency to over-analyze. She does consider the 2004 Athens Olympics to be her most embarrassing moment but is upset that anyone would say that I gave up in Athens. Some of the rest of whats at More is, well, kinda personal. But as an insomniac, Im glad and a bit envious to see her say I sleep like a log most of the time. And wed be wise to heed her suggestion to never set limits, go after your dreams, dont be afraid to push the boundaries. And laugh a lot—its good for you! (photo of Lisa Coniglio/Photo Run) More
Ed Moran Will Defend His USA 10K Crown in Atlanta
The 2011 USA Mens 10K Championships are being conducted on Monday at the AJC Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta. Moran, from
Williamsburg, Virginia, won in 2010 but races a formidable challenge from the likes of 2:04:58 marathoner and American half-marathon record-holder Ryan Hall, recent USATF Championships 10,000-meter third-place finisher Scott Bauhs, and three-time USA 10K titlist Abdi Abdirahman. The race also includes 2011 USA Mens 8K champion Bobby Mack, U.S. 25K record-holder Fernando Cabada, and 2010 USA 25K champ Andrew Carlson, plus Aaron Braun, Ian Burrell, and James Carney. Scott Bauhs Feels a Weight Lifted Off My Shoulders
Bauhs was a 21-year-old NCAA Division II star when he ran 27:48.06 for 10,000 meters in 2008. I just got so lucky finding the perfect race on that day that its been hard, he recalls. You dont get the perfect race very often, if ever. As a result, I havent had a race that has lived up to what I had built up for myself. Ive been fairly disappointed with everything after that. Now, some of that early promise is being fulfilled as Bauhs, who was third in the 10,000 at the recent USATF Championships, is on the U.S. squad for the World Championships. I feel like now Im ready to go and improve on my times and my performances, Bauhs asserts. I have some new confidence and a weight lifted off my shoulders. More
Theres a World-Class Field of Africans, Too, at Peachtree
Moran and Hall and the others mentioned above will have their race-within-a-race at the Peachtree Road Race on Monday, but the mens and womens overall victories are virtually certain to go Kenyans, Ethiopians, or a Moroccan. Sammy Kitwara, the 2009 Peachtree champ who won the 2011 Worlds Best 10K in Puerto Rico, could be the favorite among the men, but his Kenyan countryman Matthew Kisorio, fourth at this years World Cross Country Championships, is one to be feared, as is 2011 Lilac Bloomsday Run 12K winner Simon Ndirangu. The likely womens favorites are Ethiopias Misiker Mekonnin, the womens winner at Lilac Bloomsday, and Kenyas Alice Timbilili, the 2010 Peachtree runner-up. More
Edna Kiplagat Leads Kenyas Marathon Corps for Daegu
Of course, not all of the top marathoners on the globe want to run a very humid marathon at the World Championships in South Korea in late summer, so notable names like Geoffrey Mutai and Moses
Mosop, those 2:03 guys from Boston, plus Boston womens titlist Caroline Kilel and London champions Emmanuel Mutai and Mary Keitany will not be part of Kenyas contingent for the 26.2-milers in Daegu. But the Kenyans are sending Edna Kiplagat, the 2010 Los Angeles and New York City champ, and the defending mens World Champion Abel Kirui. The rest of the Kenyan men include Paris winner Benjamin Kiptoo Kolum, Dubai winner David Barmasai Tumo, 2011 Rotterdam runner-up Vincent Kipruto, and Eliud Kiptanui, fourth in Rotterdam this year. The women are Rotterdam winner Philles Ongori, Paris champ Priscah Jeptoo, and Bostons third- and fourth-place finishers Sharon Cherop, and Caroline Rotich. Carmelita Jeter Wins a 200 in France
This was not at a Diamond League meet but at a less momentous gathering in Sotteville-lès-Rouen on Saturday as Jeter, without major competition, took the 200 in 22.64 —even though she reacted poorly to the gun and, in her own words, my first 60 meters was so slow motion! Jeter won the 100 at the recent USATF Championships but was passed in the closing stages of the 200 by Shalonda Solomon; her coach, John Smith, plans more 200s for Jeter prior to the World Championships in Daegu. Yuriy Borzakovskiy Is Still Around
The 2004 Olympic 800-meter gold medalist renowned for laying well off the pace and finishing furiously has had some gaps in his resume since his triumph in Athens. But he was in fine form in Zhukovskiy, Russia, at the Brothers Znamenskiy Memorial meet, triumphing in the 800 in a brisk 1:43.99 to beat Kenya’s Boaz Lalang (1:44.20). It was the fastest two-lapper by Yuriy B since 2009. More
Manchester, New Hampshire, Hosts Fastest U.S. Miles in History
Years ago, wed hear about a downhill road mile in New Zealand which was won in 3:31 or some such time; I have memories of even reading about a 3:28. The HASLAW Manchester Mile has a net downhill of 188 feet, which enabled Brian Gagnon to take the mens race in 3:44, and Julie Culley to be the womens winner in 4:14. Yes, those times are better than the listed American track records for the mile. I thought the clock was broken when I finished, exclaimed Culley. I couldnt believe the race went that fast. More

Overall, It Was a Pretty Good Year, Surmises Jordan Hasay
As a sophomore at the University of Oregon (with a 4.02 GPA), Hasay took third in the NCAA Cross Country Championships last
fall and then had a spectacular indoor season, winning NCAA titles for the mile and 3000 meters. Outdoors, she was a Pac-10 champ in the 1500 and 5000, but at the NCAA Championships she managed just a fourth and an eighth place. Overall it was a really good year. It was just hard to end on a bad note because it makes you think about that more, figures Hasay, who is not racing in Europe this summer. One key for her is going to be to avoid fatigue in 2012. Obviously Ill have to be really ready for the (Olympic) Trials in order to make the team, she understands. Its not like I kind just breeze through it and hopefully do well at the Olympics or something. But we definitely want to try to give it the best shot so were really going to focus on that.(photo of Jordan Hasay by Victah Sailer) More
