Cabada and Pritz Win USA 25K

Fernando Cabada and Molly Pritz Take USA 25K Crowns
Cabadas 1:15:41 wasnt quite as quick as the American record of 1:14:20 he set in winning this USA 25K in 2006, but it was an important redemptive comeback for him as he bested runnerup Josh Moen (1:16:09) and third place Andrew Carlson (1:16:35), the defending champion, in this Grand Rapids race held in conjunction with the Fifth Third River Bank Run in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the rain on Saturday. You start doubting yourself and wondering, ‘was that a fluke? Cabada said of his five years between 25k victories. Moen noted we took off really hard. But Fernando kept it going. I couldn’t hang with him. Molly Pritz, 23, was a U.S. champion for the first time as she earned top womens honors, leading from the start  to triumph in 1:25:38, with Dot McMahan second in 1:28:38 and Jeannette Faber third in 1:28:48. It really tests you as a runner, Pritz said of the course.  Even if there is no one around you, it forces you to dig deep in yourself and see what you have. She noted I was hoping for a faster time, but it just didn’t come together today. But at the same time, you can’t be disappointed with winning a race. Leonard Komon Shatters Healthy Kidney 10K Record
The young Kenyan was already the world 10k roadrace recordholder with a 26:44 best. That kind of time wasnt likely on Central Parks undulating course for Saturdays Healthy Kidney 10K. We walked through the course and saw that it was not easy, Komon acknowledged, but a $20,000 bonus for breaking Gebre Gebremariams course record was being offered on top of a $25,000 first prize, and Komon took off at a furious pace, reaching the midway point in 13:26. He was slowing down by the last mile but still secured the available loot in 27:35. Shy and softspoken, he was in his own words very happy, a demonstrably gleeful winner. I was expecting a bigger challenge, he noted. Micah Kogo, the second fastest 10k roadracer in history, took second in 27:55, one second ahead of third place Joseph Ebuya. It was a Kenyan sweep of the top three places, with Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia fourth in 28:19. Bobby Curtis was the top American in ninth place in 29:09; Abdi Abdirahman was 14th in 29:44. Gebrselassie Wins His 4th Great Manchester Run 10K
My big challenge right now is trying to be better than the youngsters, stated the 38-year-old Ethiopian, and the youngster he defeated by 11 seconds in Manchester on Sunday was Britains own Chris Thompson. I didnt expect that from this boy. He ran so great, Haile Gebrselassie, whose time was 28:10, said of Thompson, who is actually 30. Thompson himself offered its great for him to be humble enough to say I pushed him. Britains Helen Clitheroe, the European Indoor 3000-meter champion, was the womens Great Manchester winner in 31:45, with Christelle Daunay of France and Grace Momanyi of Kenya second and third. I kept thinking theyre going to come flying past me. I felt strong although Im surprised with the time in those conditions, noted Clitheroe. More

Shanghai: Liu Beats Oliver, Campbell-Brown Over Jeter
Yes, its very early in the season, but who even thought Chinas Li Xiang, whos had more than two years of misery, would make it back this far and actually defeat 2010 Male Track Field Athlete of the year David Oliver, as he did on Sunday in the 110-meter hurdles in Shangahi, in a result that must have given the home crowd paroxysms of pleasure? Liu was clocked in 13.07 to 13.18 for Oliver. A dejected Oliver commented I wish I had the answer to why I underperformed tonight. I will just have to go away and train harder and be ready for my next major competition. In the womens 100, Jamaicas Veronica Campbell-Brown, on her 29th birthday, edged American Carmelita Jeter, 10.92 to 10.95. Jamaica also scored a win in the womens 400-meter hurdles, as Kaliese Spencer took first place in 54.20, with Lashinda Demus of the U.S. next in 54.58. The top mens 1500-meter runner in the world right now and of course this could change several times in 2011 is Nixon Chepseba, whod run a 3:31.84 in Doha on May 6 and lowered that to 3:31.42 in Shanghai as he beat Olympic gold medalist Asbel Kiprop, who was timed in 3:31.76. In the womens 5000, Kenya’s World champion Vivian Cheruyiot prevailed in 14:31,92 with Sentayeha Ejigu of Ethiopia second in 14:32.87 and Linet Masai of Kenya third in 14:32.95. Another Kenyan, Viola Kibiwot, ran 14:34.86 for fourth. Yep, 14:34.86 only took fourth place. In a fast 3000-meter steeplechase, Brimin Kipruto won in 8:02.28 with Paul Koech next in 8:02.42. The Armorys Millrose Games Could Be a Very Different Meet
The 105th edition of the venerable indoor track meet will indeed be staged at the Armory Track Field Center in Upper Manhattan rather than at midtowns Madison Square Garden. The Millrose Games deserves the best track possible especially in this performance-driven sport with the London Summer Olympics just around the corner, affirms Dr. Norbert Sander, president of the Millrose Games and the Armory Foundation. The Armory is just that exceptional place to compete for professionals, collegiate, and high school stars in the modern track era. Sanders envisions a Saturday day session with more college, high school, open and masters events leading up to the traditional Millrose schedule from 5-9 p.m. concluding with the meets signature Wanamaker Mile. Unlike the previous tight Friday night schedule, the Saturday format allows for more athletes to experience these great games, a true New York and national tradition, Sander states. More

Benita Willis Explains the Freihofers Run for Women to Us
This is actually very nice material. Its a blow-by-blow video in nine short parts in which Willis, the Australian whos won this Albany, New York 5k three times, gives a clear analysis of how she attacks each feature of the course, and how you should, too, if youre racing there on June 4. Thanks for the lesson, Benita. More

Oregon Men and Women Prevail at Pac-10 Championships
The Championships were in Tucson, and the Ducks consigned host Arizona to the runnerup spot in both battles, 129 to 111 on the mens side and a very tight 154.5 to 150 in the womens standings. Matthew Centrowitz did succeed in winning his third straight 1500 at these Pac-10 Championships (hell be back for a fourth next year) and third place Abdi of Arizona called him one of the best in the nation right now. Jordan Hasays 1500 and 5000 victories (she described herself as running on fumes in the latter event) were crucial to the Oregon womens victory, which wasnt secured until Laura Roesler anchored her 4400 relay to first place. I just needed to win, Roesler realized I was running like I was getting caught.(photo of Jordan Hasay by Victah Sailer) More

Jeshua Anderson Is a Four-Time Pac-10 Titleist
Andersons 48.13 for the 400-meter hurdles was a Washington State and a Pac-10 Championships record. He joined only seven other men, including Steve Prefontaine and Aaron Aguayo, as a four-time winner of the same event at these Championships. It feels good. Im glad I was able to break my personal record which is two years old, stated Anderson. Im happy with my time and I know that I can keep running and keep getting faster. More

College Coach Has Heart Attack at SEC Championships
And fortunately, personnel with the expertise to save Mississippi State Director of Track and Field Al Schmidts life were on hand at those Southeastern Conference Championships at the University of Georgia campus.  Schmidts heart stopped twice, and as another Mississippi State coach points out, just being here, at the SEC track meet, saved his life, there’s not a doubt in my mind. You had all these people and all this equipment right here. And they knew what they were doing. If he had been in a restaurant or his hotel, he wouldn’t have made it. More

So Are You a Bounder or a Shuffler?
Peter Larson, also known as the Runblogger, analyzed the stride length, footstrike and others aspects of the running form of the top finishers in Aprils Boston Marathon and discovered that mens runnerup Moses Mosop is indeed a bounder while fifth place woman Kara Goucher is a shuffler. And Desiree Davila, the American who feel just short of running the womens race, takes an exceptional number of strides per minute. More

The Bay Area Running Community Sure Does Have Fun
Chris Chavez, a former University of California cross country star whos turned into a fine half marathoner for the Bay Area Track Club, believes were fortunate to take part in a sport that has such an incredibly wide array of participants. At any given road race you will see the full spectrum of ages and skill levels and whether someone is there to win, set a personal best, spend time with friends or just have a good time, everybody is encouraged to show up. He promises I will always support people getting up, getting outside and exercising at any level. This weekend, Chavez, Bolota Asmerom and Stephan Shay were to be part of a 13-person centipede tied together to run the Bay to Breakers 12k. Of late, Chavez has been watching world class performances at the Cardinal Invitational at Stanford and, on a lighter note, attending Palo Altos Running of the Bulls 5k and actually joined teammates Magdalena Lewy Boulet and Asmerom in dressing like bulls and running after a passel of local runners. I met some awesome people and was astonished and excited by the number of kids that were so enthusiastic about running, notes Chavez.  A running event doesn’t need to be about fast times in order for it to be great if it can unite a community while supporting fitness and a healthy lifestyle. Correct. It sounds like a full life, Chris, but when do we get the photos of you and Magda dressed like bulls? More
