Anna Pierce in Boston Mile
Anna Pierce Headlines B.A.A. Invitational Mile on April 17
Pierce is one of Americas best in the 800, the 1500/mile, and the 3000-meter steeplechase, and fans have been wondering where shes been so far in 2011. Well, it is a
long year with the key goal being the World Championships at the end of the summer. In any case, Pierce will reappear the day before the Boston Marathon to compete for a $3,000 first prize at the B.A.A. Invitational Mile, which she won in 2009. Her rivals will include Treniere Moser, a three-time USATF 1500-meter champion (as Treniere Clement) and Britains Charlotte Browning, an NCAA champion at Florida State, plus former University of North Carolina star Brie Felnagle, Erin Bedell, and Serbias Marina Muncan. Sundays schedule also includes the B.A.A. 5K, which also has elite prize money. Australian Ben St Lawrence, with a best time of 13:10, may be the class of the mens field, which also includes American standouts Bobby Curtis, Ben Bruce, Ben True, Nick Arciniaga and Olympic triathlete Jarrod Shoemaker. Lineth Chepkurui of Kenya could be the womens favorite; former Stanford star Teresa McWalters and Stephanie Pezzullo are also entered. Its likely that more entrants will be named before race time. Can the U.S. Victory Drought in Boston End Soon?
Soon as inthis April 18? Greg Meyer, the last American male Boston champ, back in 1983, believes prioritizing is one of the keys. It cant be, oh, thats my next marathon, Meyer says. Its (got to be), thats the marathon I want to win. Thats what its going to take for one of those guys to do it. Meyer notes that Meb Keflezighis 2009 New York City victory came after injuries had caused him to have a break from the marathon. His whole focus, when he came back for an extended period of time, was that one race, Meyer points out. What you see happening now, they go from spring to fall, spring to fall, spring to fall. They never get off the marathon cycle. They start to run tired. Meyer also sees great potential coming out of high school but suggests one of my issues with the college program now is, theyre not teaching kids how to race anymore, theyre teaching kids how to qualify for nationals. They need to know how to race so when they get to post-collegiate life, they know how to race. More
Can Alistair Cragg Give Ireland Its First Boston Male Champ Since 1974?
The 1974 winner, Neil Cusack, was also Irelands only male titlist in the Boston Marathon. Cragg, one of the greatest distance runners in University of Arkansas history,
is now a Mammoth Track Club member coming off an encouraging sixth-place 1:00:49 at the NYC Half-Marathon and now, at 30, making a serious effort in the marathon. Right now, I feel like I’m getting more out of my body, says Cragg, who has been putting in 110-mile weeks. A lot of older guys seem to be hitting the marathon right now. So, I’m feeling very controlled about my running. If I could finish in the top five, I would be over the top, Cragg he says. I plan to run my own race and see how it develops. Maybe one or two guys are going to have the best day of their lives, but I’ll be happy to get up and over the hills. (photo of Alsitair Cragg by Victah Sailer) More
Houston Is Making Changes in Olympic Marathon Trials Course
We received feedback and comments from numerous athletes who competed in the recent USA Half Marathon Championships and we have modified the route to minimize the out-and-backs, reports Brant Kotch, president and race director of the Houston Marathon Committee. The improved route is as runner- and spectator-friendly as possible, and we believe the Olympic Trials participants will be very happy with it. The pending route should be even faster than the USA Championships route, which actually produced finishing times faster than predicted by statisticians. The final revisions to the course will be detailed in the committees next newsletter.

How Many More British Records Can Mo Farah Get?
Farah, who now trains in Oregon with Coach Alberto Salazar and with workout partners
like Galen Rupp, has a half-dozen British bests at distances ranging from the 3000 to the half-marathon (his 1:00:23 NYC Half-Marathon victory). One possible additional target for him would be Jon Browns British 10,000 standard of 27:18. It would be nice and I would love to break the 10,000 record this year but well have to see what happens. My main focus this year is the World Championships in Daegu, says Farah, who has multiple European titles to his credit. In the last two World Champs, I finished sixth and seventh, so my aim is to improve on that before I look at breaking records. Farah notes Ive always had natural speed and in addition to that, I train hard at the endurance. As a kid I was very active by playing football and just running around in general.(photo of Mo Farah by Victah Sailer) More
Bill Rodgers Will Be Grand Marshal of Boston Marathon
This news got lost a bit on Monday behind the announcement of Joan Benoit Samuelsons entry in the April 18 marathon. Rodgers, the four-time Boston champion, will ride in a Nissan pace car ahead of the lead runners, and the car will be identified with his name and accomplishment. Rodgers won the Boston Marathon in 1975 and in three consecutive years from 1978 through 1980. He last ran the Boston Marathon in 2009, completing the course in 4:06:49 at age 61.
RunIndiana Webmaster Gets Ready for his 50th Marathon
Jed Pearson operates RunIndiana.com, an excellent regional website, and he practices what he preaches. His 26.2-mile venture in Boston on Monday will be his third marathon there and his 50th overall (including ultras). I run about 1,400 miles a year. Not enough for marathon training, but consistent enough, admits Pearson. But the important thing is that after Monday, Pearson will have done one more marathon than his brother Lee. Hes done running, and I will have the family record, boasts Pearson. More
